Carpet Maintenance
Keeping it clean
A little known fact is that carpet walked on in bare or stocking feet is more susceptible to attracting and holding soil because of sticky skin oils, some of which will not vacuum away. Skin oil from pets has this same effect. We encourage our customers to avoid home cleaning extractors and supermarket rental equipment. It is much wiser to hire a professional carpet cleaner with truck mounted hot water extraction equipment. A professional will first spot clean any badly stained areas and then use the extraction equipment with the water heated to at least 180º. This will help insure that all soil, body oils, and any cleaning solution residues are completely removed.
We also recommend that the consumer avoid the dry powder cleaning methods as they do not thoroughly clean your carpeting and can lead to re-soiling problems. Proper hot water extraction cleaning should be done at least once a year to remove visible and invisible air pollutants, skin oils, spills, and deposits which are all sticky which can attract and hold dirt and may not vacuum away.
Proper vacuuming should be done two to three times per week with a heavy duty upright vacuum cleaner with the brushes set at the proper height for carpet. Wool carpet should be vacuumed with a hard surface floor attachment, without brushes, to avoid abrasion to the pile. Since no brushes are used on wools, even more frequent vacuuming is recommended. Three to four passes of the vacuum should be made over each section of the carpet and the vacuum bag should be no more than half full.
